It is also used to study the mechanisms of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Its synthesis can be accomplished through the reaction of chloroacetone and sodium acetate, which generates a 6-chloro lactam. The structure was first isolated from Australian natural sources by liquid chromatography analysis.
