2-Chloro-5-hydroxybenzoic acid is a compound that contains a hydroxyl group. It is an organic acid and a monomer that can be used in the preparation of coumarin derivatives. 2-Chloro-5-hydroxybenzoic acid can be prepared by oxidation of 2,3,4,5,6 tetrahydrobenzoquinone with hydrogen peroxide followed by hydrolysis. The oxidation step is carried out using potassium permanganate as oxidant and activated manganese dioxide as catalyst. This method yields the desired product in high yield.
