3-Chlorobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid is a novel aminothiophene compound that inhibits the activity of DNA repair enzymes. It has been shown to be cytotoxic in cancer cells, with a high level of selectivity for non-small cell lung cancer. 3-Chlorobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid binds to the DNA repair enzyme Mcl-1 and prevents it from binding to DNA. This prevents the enzyme from repairing damaged DNA, leading to apoptosis and cell death. This drug has also been shown to inhibit homologous recombination in vitro and in vivo, which is an important pathway for DNA repair.
