Descrizione

Cholic acid methyl ester is a bile acid that is synthesized from cholic acid. It has antimicrobial activity and can be used as a synthesis intermediate for other pharmaceuticals. Cholic acid methyl ester has been shown to have hemolytic activity against erythrocytes and the potential to cause liver damage. It also has pharmacokinetic properties that are pH dependent, with the optimum at about 7-8. This drug is metabolized by hydrolysis of the glycol ester bond and hydroxylation of the tertiary alcohol group, which produces conjugates that are excreted in bile or eliminated through urine. Cholic acid methyl ester can form stable complexes with fatty acids and may be used to treat metabolic disorders such as hepatic steatosis.
