Coumarin-3-carboxylic acid is a coumarin derivative that inhibits the growth of bacteria. It has been shown to inhibit the replication of nuclear DNA by binding to the intramolecular hydrogen bonds in nucleic acids, which prevents the formation of hydrogen bonds between complementary nucleotides. Coumarin-3-carboxylic acid also exhibits synchronous fluorescence when it is mixed with other compounds, such as human serum. Coumarin derivatives are often used as fluorescence probes due to their ability to bind to specific DNA sequences and change their fluorescent properties. The hydrophobic effect is one of the major reasons for the biological activity of coumarin derivatives.
