It is an important precursor in the Friedel-Crafts reaction. 1-Chlorooctane is used as a solvent for pharmaceutical preparations, as well as for other industrial uses such as the production of dipropyl ether and phosphorus pentachloride. 1-Chlorooctane can be prepared by reacting phosphorus pentachloride with dimethyl formamide. 1-Chlorooctane is a solid catalyst that is soluble in n-dimethyl formamide (DMF) and hydrochloric acid.
