2,5-Dimethylbenzothiazole is a triosephosphate reactant that can be used to inactivate methyl groups and yield the corresponding 2,5-dimethylbenzothiazol-3-yl phosphate. This reaction proceeds through proton abstraction from the methyl group followed by an elimination of a water molecule. The reaction occurs at the reactive dimer interface of the enzyme and isomerizes to form 2,5-dimethylbenzothiazol-3-yl phosphate. The rate constant for this reaction at constant temperature is 0.062 M(-1) s(-1) and it has been shown to be sensitive to sulfur and geochemical conditions as well as radiation.
