N,N'-Diphenylbenzidine is a chemical compound that has been used as a dye and a photoluminescent material. It has the ability to emit light when it is excited by light or other energy sources, such as hydrochloric acid. The dihedral angle of the molecule is important for the optical properties of this compound. The pyrazole ring, which is part of the molecule's structure, can be reduced by dehydroascorbic acid. This reaction causes a redox potential in which the molecule will either emit blue or yellow light depending on its environment. N,N'-Diphenylbenzidine also has an affinity for binding with calcium ions and can be classified as being either chemically neutral or basic.
