This drug binds to the molybdenum cofactor in the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase, thereby inhibiting the production of ATP. 4,4'-Dicyano-2,2'-bipyridine also reacts with formic acid and ruthenium to produce a redshifted product that can be detected by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy.
