The compound 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine is a hydrogen-bond acceptor with the ability to form hydrogen bonds. It has been used as a model system for the study of hydrogen bonding in pharmaceuticals. In addition, this chemical has been used in pest control and as a diagnostic agent. The compound can be activated by light or heat and is used for the treatment of head lice. The mechanism of action is thought to be due to the production of reactive oxygen species that cause cell damage. 5,5'-Dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and may inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Clinical studies have shown that 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine has low toxicity in animals and humans.
