Dimethyl 1,3-acetonedicarboxylate is a chemical that belongs to the class of amines. It has been shown to be an effective analgesic in animal studies. This compound is produced stereoselectively from acetone and diethyl malonate. Dimethyl 1,3-acetonedicarboxylate can be synthesized by reacting sodium hydroxide with dimethyl malonate or by reacting a solution of sodium hydroxide with acetic acid and methyl iodide. The chemical reactions involved in this synthesis are the Aldol cyclization and hydroxide reduction. FTIR spectroscopy has been used to study the structure of this product. Citric acid has also been found to react with dimethyl 1,3-acetonedicarboxylate, producing citric acid as a product.
