1,2-Diethoxy-4-nitrobenzene is a chemical compound with the formula CH2O2C6H4NO2. It is a colorless liquid that reacts with malonate to produce diethyl malonate and glycol. The reaction has been shown to be optimal at pH = 1.8 when using bromoethane as a solvent. The crystal structure of 1,2-diethoxy-4-nitrobenzene has been determined by X-ray crystallography and it was found to have a monoclinic space group P21/c with cell dimensions of a = 17.928(3) Å, b = 8.096(1) Å, c = 12.547(1) Å and β = 112.38(1)°.
The reaction was performed in methylene chloride under phase transfer conditions at 25 °C for 2 hours on average
