It exhibits fluorescence in the visible region and voltammetric properties. 2,5-Dibromo-3,4-diphenylthiophene is used to make devices that have optical properties and can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of other compounds. It reacts with sodium hydroxide solution or calcium ions in the presence of hydroxide solution to produce luminescence. This reaction proceeds through five steps: sulfide formation, five membered ring formation, bromination, substitution with phenyl thiol group and finally addition of hydrogen sulfide.
