Descrizione:Dimethyl sulfate is the organic compound with the formula CH3OSO2. It is a colorless liquid that can be obtained by reacting methyl alcohol with sulfur trioxide. Dimethyl sulfate has been used in analytical chemistry as an extractant for basic proteins and picolinic acid. Dimethyl sulfate is also found in nutrient solutions, where it serves as a source of sulfate for plants. The dimethyl sulfate molecule contains two methyl groups that are attached to the sulfur atom, which results in a molecule with two intramolecular hydrogen bonds. This feature gives dimethyl sulfate a high boiling point relative to its molecular mass of 114 g/mol and allows it to be crystallized from solution at room temperature. Dimethyl sulfate is also used as an intermediate in the production of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reagents, such as primers and nucleotides.
