It has been shown to inhibit the incorporation of uracil into dsDNA and to act as a competitive inhibitor of adefovir and bisphosphonates. (2,2-Dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-5-yl)methanol inhibits phosphorylation by methylation of the hydroxyl group on the C5 position of the sugar moiety. This reaction results in an alkylated sugar with a phosphite group at the C5 position. The resulting product can undergo chloromethylation, which generates an additional reactive site for covalent modifications such as acetalization or esterification.
