It has been used in animal feed and as an additive for flocculent. 1,3-Dichloro-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin is also a multifunctional compound that acts as a surfactant and colorant. This chemical has been shown to be effective in inhibiting the corrosion of steel in water with high levels of sulfates.
1,3-Dichloro-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin is made by adding potassium persulfate to anhydrous sodium hydroxide. The reaction produces hydrogen chloride gas which reacts with chloromethyl methyl ether to form the desired product.
