2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-mercaptophenol is an organic compound that contains a phenolic hydroxyl group and two thiol groups. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties and can inhibit lipid peroxidation in cells. 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-mercaptophenol has also been shown to suppress the production of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1β (IL1β) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα). One study found that 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-mercaptophenol inhibited IL1β production by reducing the activation of nuclear factor κB (NFκB) in fibroblast cells. The compound was also found to be effective at inhibiting the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are molecules responsible for oxidative stress.
