3,5-Dimethylbenzoylchloride is a chromatographic agent that has been shown to bind to the response element in the promoter region of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). This binding causes an increase in the production of certain chemokines and an inhibition of HIV-1 gene expression. 3,5-Dimethylbenzoylchloride also inhibits HIV-2 and other retroviruses. The mechanism by which this drug inhibits HIV transcription is unknown, but it may involve interference with chloride transport or hydrogen bonding. 3,5-Dimethylbenzoylchloride has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of adenosine A3 receptor. The compound undergoes ester hydrolysis under acidic conditions and hydrolysis by HCl in basic conditions. It also reacts with amines at elevated temperatures to form amides. 3,5-Dimethylbenzoylchloride forms coordination complexes with metal ions
