2,2-Dimethylbutyrylchloride is a synthetic spirodiclofen derivative. It is a chloride ionophore that inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol by inhibiting the enzyme 3-mercaptopropionase. 2,2-Dimethylbutyrylchloride has been shown to be a potent CB2 receptor agonist in vitro. The physiological effects of this drug have not been studied in detail, but it has been shown to reduce high cholesterol levels in mice and rats. This agent also inhibits the accumulation of hydrogen ions during the hydrolytic cleavage of propionate by reducing the production of 3-mercaptopropionic acid. 2,2-Dimethylbutyrylchloride can be used as an acid catalyst for organic reactions.
