It can also be used as an anticoagulant to prevent clotting of blood. 2',6'-Dichloroacetanilide binds to the active site of the enzyme coumarin reductase to form an irreversible complex that inhibits its activity. The synthesis of this compound involves reacting diphenyl ether with chloracetyl chloride followed by hydrolysis with hydrogen sulfate or orthophosphoric acid.
