1,4-Di-tert-butylbenzene is an aromatic hydrocarbon and a good inhibitor for the reaction of trifluoroacetic acid with an aryl halide. It inhibits the reaction by binding to the carbonyl group on the aryl halide and blocking access to trifluoroacetic acid. The chloride ion in solution increases the inhibition because it is a better nucleophile than water. This inhibition can be reversed by adding fluorescence probe, which removes the chloride ion from solution.
1,4-Di-tert-butylbenzene has been shown to have synergistic interaction with other inhibitors such as trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and phenylpropionic acid.
