• Descrizione: 4,5-Dihydroxy-1,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)imidazolidin-2-one is a crystalline cellulose that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to be active against a variety of bacteria, fungi, and yeasts. In vitro studies show that it inhibits the growth of hepatocyte-like cells and benzalkonium chloride-resistant bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. 4,5-Dihydroxy-1,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)imidazolidin-2-one has also been shown to have clinical relevance in the treatment of urinary tract infections caused by E. coli and Proteus mirabilis. The reactive hydroxyl group on the molecule interacts with proteins and other cellular components in aqueous solutions that contain nitrogen atoms. This interaction leads to the formation of crosslinks between these molecules and inhibits bacterial growth.
