2,5-Dimethylbenzaldehyde is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of fatty acid esters. It is an aromatic compound that has a pleasant, nutty odor. 2,5-Dimethylbenzaldehyde can be found as a byproduct in the production of diethyl succinate from ethyl benzene. It is also present in the emissions of 3,4-dimethylbenzyl alcohol and can be found in model systems for proton transfer reactions. The Gattermann-Koch reaction was developed for the synthesis of 2,5-dimethylbenzaldehyde. This chemical can be synthesized by reacting benzoic acid with dimethylether and thermodynamic data are available for this reaction mechanism. Chemical ionization mass spectroscopy can be used to identify this chemical in fatty acids.
