Di(p-chlorophenyl) disulfide is a polymeric matrix that is used to treat infections of the skin and mucous membranes. It has antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Di(p-chlorophenyl) disulfide inhibits many enzymes that are involved in the synthesis of infectious agents and their cell walls, including amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, and enzyme inhibitors. The antimicrobial agent binds to both bacterial and mammalian cells by reacting with sulfhydryl groups on proteins. This reaction leads to the inhibition of cell wall synthesis in bacteria and prevents bacterial proliferation.
