1,3-Dichloro-2-propanol is a chlorinating agent and has been used as a reaction solution in the analysis of glycerol. It is also used to determine the chloride content in liquid samples. This reagent reacts with glycerin to produce glycerol dichlorohydrin, which can be determined using an analytical method. The reaction mechanism for 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol with glycerin is not well understood, but it has been shown to involve autophagy and mitochondrial membrane potential.
