Dieldrin is a highly toxic insecticide that is used to control invertebrate pests in wastewater treatment. It is considered a persistent organic pollutant and has been shown to have high values in the environment. Dieldrin has significant cytotoxicity and acute toxicities, which are attributed to its ability to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential and cause liver lesions. Dieldrin also inhibits ryanodine receptor activity, which may be related to its toxicity. The polymerase chain reaction technique has been used for the detection of dieldrin in human serum samples. Crystals of dieldrin were found by electron microscopy in the mitochondria of rats treated with this compound.
