Diethylstilbestrol is a synthetic hormone that belongs to the class of steroids. It is used to treat endometriosis, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and other conditions. Diethylstilbestrol binds to estrogen receptors and increases the production of epidermal growth factor (EGF) in the skin. This effect may be due to its ability to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which are enzymes that degrade collagen. Diethylstilbestrol also inhibits DNA synthesis by binding to nuclear dna, preventing transcription and replication. These effects have been shown using a photomultiplier tube assay on testicular cells as well as an experimental model involving dietary administration of diethylstilbestrol and estradiol benzoate.
