O-Dichlorobenzene is a chemical with the molecular formula of C6H4Cl2O. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and has a sweet odor. It is used as an intermediate for the synthesis of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and dyes. O-Dichlorobenzene is toxic to liver enzymes, while it also has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal studies. The main mechanism of toxicity is due to its ability to inhibit various enzymes, including aminotransferases, which are necessary for protein synthesis. This compound can cause oxidative damage by reacting with iron and copper ions. It also reacts with hydrochloric acid in the presence of water vapor to produce hydrochloric acid and hydrogen chloride gas, both of which are corrosive acids that can react with other compounds to form new compounds.
