2,6-Dimethyl-4H-pyran-4-one is a monosubstituted carbonyl compound that has hydrogen bond and redox potential characteristics. It is a reactive species that can be reduced to the corresponding methylene and oxidized to the corresponding carboxylic acid. The 2,6-dimethylpyranone has been used in coordination chemistry to form metal complexes. This molecule can also react with hydrochloric acid to form 2,6-dimethylhydrochloric acid or with sodium hydroxide to form 2,6-dimethylacetate. 2,6-Dimethylpyranone is typically used as an organic solvent in the production of fatty acids due to its ability to dissolve oils.
