2,3-Dimethyl-1-butene is a hydrocarbon that is reactive with chlorine and forms an alkyl chloride. It has been used as a homogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of acid from inorganic acids and sulfonic acids. The reaction mechanism is not well understood, but it may be due to the formation of a coordination complex between the metal hydroxide and 2,3-dimethyl-1-butene. 2,3-Dimethyl-1-butene reacts with acid to form dimethyl fumarate.
2,3-Dimethyl-1-butene can also react with water to form an inorganic acid or a sulfonic acid. The equilibrium constant is dependent on the concentration of water in solution.
