Dodecylbenzenesulfonyl azide is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It reacts with nucleophiles to form sulfur-nitrogen bonds. This reaction has been shown to be stereoselective, with the sulfonate group being positioned on the more hindered face of the molecule. Dodecylbenzenesulfonyl azide has also been used to synthesize epidermal growth factor and other nitrogen-containing compounds, which are important for cell growth and division. The aliphatic hydrocarbon chain of dodecylbenzenesulfonyl azide can be replaced by an aliphatic amine or thiol group to form a functionalized heterocycle.
