3,5-Dimethylthiophenol is an efficient method for the synthesis of sulfoxides. It is a redox agent that can be used in polymerization reactions with carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide as the sole carbon source. 3,5-Dimethylthiophenol has been shown to react with thiolates to form a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) probe. This reaction takes place on metal surfaces, such as gold and silver, where it is immobilized through a polymer film. The SERS probe can be used for detection of naphthalene molecules by measuring the intensity of the emitted light.
