2,3-Dibromo-5-methylpyridine is an organic compound that is used as a building block in the synthesis of phthalimides. It is also used in cross-coupling reactions to create unsymmetrical biaryls. This compound reacts with chlorobenzene to form 2,3-dibromo-5-methylbenzaldehyde. The reaction can be conducted under mild conditions and does not require a nitrogen source or a strong base. The product can be used for syntheses of carbonylative and coupling reactions. The synthesis of caprolactam from oxalyl chloride and ammonia requires the use of 2,3-dibromo-5-methylpyridine as the starting material.
