Diethyl disulfide (DEDS) is a chemical that has been used to investigate the role of disulfide bonds in infectious diseases. DEDS binds to protein thiols and forms stable covalent linkages with them, which alters the function of proteins. DEDS has been shown to be effective against autoimmune diseases by preventing the formation of reactive oxygen species. DEDS also reacts with metal hydroxides, such as aluminum hydroxide, to form complexes that are soluble in organic solvents. These complexes can be analyzed using analytical methods such as solid phase microextraction and x-ray diffraction data. DEDS is a linear molecule that conforms to certain physical properties, including redox potential and molecular weight.
