2,6-Dihydroxynaphthalene is a reactive intermediate in the Suzuki coupling reaction. It is used as a building block for organic synthesis and has been shown to undergo hydrogen bonding with sodium salts and amides. 2,6-Dihydroxynaphthalene also has analytical applications because it can be used to measure transport properties of organic acids. Rat liver microsomes have been found to metabolize 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene by oxidation at the p-hydroxybenzoic acid group to form a group p2 metabolite. This metabolite has also been identified in the urine of rats treated with 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene. The structure of this compound was determined using X-ray crystal structures. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding was observed in these compounds and confirmed through an x-ray crystal structure analysis.
