D-2,4-Diaminobutyric acid is a conjugate of the amino acid D-alanine and the fatty acid 2,4-diaminobutyric acid. It is used in cell culture to inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus. The long-term treatment with D-2,4-Diaminobutyric acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria that are resistant to penicillin. D-2,4-Diaminobutyric acid inhibits bacterial growth by binding to aminoacyl tRNA synthetase and blocking the attachment of amino acids to tRNA. This leads to inhibition of protein synthesis and cell division.
