It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of serotonin uptake and receptor binding and also inhibits chloride uptake by cells. 1,4-Dibromo-2-nitrobenzene has been shown to be toxic to both the metal surface and the cell membrane, inhibiting cellular respiration. This compound has two isomers: cis and trans. The cis isomer is more potent than the trans isomer.
