Meso-2,3-dibromosuccinic acid is a tetradentate (four coordinated) ligand that binds to metal ions. It is a supramolecular compound that has been used as a clinical agent for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Meso-2,3-dibromosuccinic acid binds to anions in the blood and reduces the concentration of low density lipoprotein cholesterol. The ligand can also be used to remove toxins from water and industrial wastes.
Meso-2,3-dibromosuccinic acid is synthesized by reacting 2,3-dibromobenzoic acid with sodium methoxide in methanol solution at 0 °C. This reaction produces meso-2,3-dibromosuccinic acid and sodium bicarbonate. The structure of meso-2,3-dibromosuccinic acid was determined by nm
