2,6-Dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone is a compound that has an acidic character and can be found in the form of its sodium salt. It is used as an antioxidant in food and cosmetics. 2,6-Dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone has been found to have a potential redox reaction with hydrogen fluoride. This reaction creates a new molecule that can be used to synthesize coumarin derivatives. 2,6-Dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone also has properties that make it useful for sublethal doses of oxidative injury and for protecting cells against oxidative damage by reactive oxygen species. The pH optimum for this compound is around 7.2. The rat liver microsomes are capable of metabolizing 2,6-dimethyl benzoquinone into its reduced form (i.e., 2,6-dimethoxybenzoquinone).
