It is used as a chiral catalyst in organic syntheses and as an intermediate for the synthesis of cilastatin. The racemic mixture (rac-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxamide) can be obtained by reacting the diazoacetate ester of l-tartaric acid with isobutene. The nitrite salt can be prepared by dissolving copper in nitric acid and adding diazoacetate ester to the solution. This reaction produces a high yield of racemic mixture (rac-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxamide).
