It can be used as a cross-linking agent in polymer membranes, where it forms covalent bonds with the membrane material. Dimethylisopropylchlorosilane is also used in wastewater treatment, where it can react with hydroxyl groups to form silanol groups. This process increases the solubility of organic compounds and their subsequent removal from water. The diameter of dimethylisopropylchlorosilane is 4 nm, which makes it suitable for use in metathesis reactions that require large molecules.
