1,3-Dithiane is a compound that can be synthesized by reacting two equivalents of dithiol with one equivalent of carbonyl group. The product is a 1,3-dithiane molecule with an unstable sulfoxide functional group. It has been shown to be anticancerous in mice and rats via the formation of reactive oxygen species and subsequent DNA damage. The synthesis of 1,3-dithiane requires a reaction between boron trifluoride etherate and the carbonyl group of an isoprenoid compound or other carbonyl compounds. This reaction produces the desired product as well as a sulfoxide functional group. 1,3-Dithiane is also found in nature in some plants such as celery, parsley, and artichoke leaves as well as in cucumbers and watermelon seeds.
