4,5-Diphenyl-2-oxazolethiol is a fluorescent compound that is used as a ligand to form metal complexes. It has been shown to bind to the chloride anion, which is found in many biologically important compounds such as nucleotides, amino acids and chlorinated solvents. The functional groups of 4,5-diphenyl-2-oxazolethiol may be involved in the binding process. This compound crystallizes with mononuclear coordination geometry and has a molecular weight of 181.87 g/mol. Size-exclusion chromatography shows that this compound exists as a dimer with each molecule having a molecular weight of 93.94 g/mol. 4,5-Diphenyl-2-oxazolethiol has been shown to be luminescent with an emission maximum at 500 nm in solution or on the surface of glass slides.
