The compound has been shown to catalyze the reduction of protonated organic molecules, such as ethylene and other alkenes, to their corresponding alcohols. 1,8-Dichlorooctane is also capable of reducing activated covid-19 pandemic (A/H1N1) virus in aqueous solution. 1,8-Dichlorooctane can be used in analytical chemistry as an additive to dimethylformamide (DMF) in order to increase its solubility and improve its ability to dissolve polar compounds.
