Methyl 2-[[(1,1-dimethylethoxy)carbonyl]amino]-3-nitrobenzoate (MEB) is a benzoate derivative that has been shown to possess antioxidant activity. It is used in the synthesis of vitamin C and E, as well as in the prevention of symptoms induced by these vitamins. MEB is also an inhibitor of enzymes such as benzoic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid oxidase. MEB has been shown to have a Langmuir adsorption isotherm at the air water interface which exhibits maximum adsorption at pH 7.5, with a binding constant of 3 x 10 M. MEB has been found to be pharmacokinetically stable in rats and rabbits, with rapid absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and distribution throughout the body via plasma proteins. The mechanism of action for MEB involves inhibition of bacterial growth by inhibiting the enzyme activities required for bacterial cell wall synthesis
