2-Ethylhexanoic acid is an organic acid that is synthesized in the liver from 2-ethylhexanol and can be found in the blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid of humans. It has been shown that 2-ethylhexanoic acid is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes to produce a number of products, including alpha-, beta-, and gamma-hydroxyacids. The hydrolysis of 2-ethylhexanoic acid by esterases or glucuronidases leads to the formation of corresponding carboxylic acids. This process can also be catalyzed by glutathione reductase or cytochrome P450 enzymes. Dimethyl fumarate is one example of a product formed from 2-ethylhexanoic acid metabolism. Dimethyl fumarate inhibits two enzymes, fatty acid synthase and acyl CoA oxidase, which are involved in fatty acid synthesis.
