The compound has two stereoisomers (R and S) due to the chiral nature of the propylene oxide starting material. 3,4-Epoxytetrahydrofuran is used in the production of acrylonitrile, which is used in the production of plastics. 3,4-Epoxytetrahydrofuran has been shown to have strong inhibitory effects on fungus Penicillium rubrum. This compound also inhibits germination rates in some plants.
