Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and blocking the attachment of aminoacyl-tRNA molecules. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in a variety of tissues, including muscle tissue. The chemical ionization mass spectrometric technique can be used to detect chloramphenicol residues in meat samples. Validation studies have been performed using urine samples to measure chloramphenicol concentrations. This antibiotic can also be detected using a chromatographic technique on polyribosomes isolated from muscle tissue.
