Ethyl 2-methylacetoacetate has been shown to have antiinflammatory activity and can be used to treat HIV infections. The transport rate of ethyl 2-methylacetoacetate has been shown to be higher than other esters, such as ethyl acetoacetate. Acetylation reactions are typically catalyzed by acid or base, but the reaction mechanism of this compound has not yet been elucidated. X-ray crystal structures show that ethyl 2-methylacetoacetate reacts with basic proteins such as sodium carbonate, leading to cell lysis.
