5-Ethyl-2-[2-(4-nitrophenoxy)ethyl]pyridine is a water-soluble, organic compound that is soluble in acetone, ether, ethanol and methanol. It is used as an intermediate for the production of pioglitazone, which is a drug for the treatment of diabetes. The reaction process begins with the addition of an alkali metal hydroxide to a solution containing 5-ethyl-2-[2-(4-nitrophenoxy)ethyl]pyridine and an organic solvent. This reaction mixture is then heated and stirred until it reaches a certain temperature.
